Ok, here’s a photo that Lana MacNaughton (women’s moto exhibit) took of me riding last year. I started riding in March 2013. I bought my ’03 Honda Shadow 750 aka ‘Thunderbeast’ a month later..I ride everyday and my motorcycle is my only transportation. I’ve been a make-up artist for MAC Cosmetics since 1999. When I was in my late teens early 20’s living in Atlanta all my friends had motorcycles so I was always riding on the back of someone’s bike or hanging out at the garage while they worked on them. I’ve always loved motorcycles and had always wanted to learn to ride. It wasn’t till years later after I moved west to San Diego that I started riding and bought my own motorcycle. In 2011 I was having a rough time going through a divorce and trying to get back on my feet emotionally. I wanted to do something for myself that I had always wanted to do..buy a motorcycle and ride! And so I did. Best decision ever. I’m always happy when I’m riding and I look forward to every adventure on the bike, even if it’s just a quick trip to the grocery store.
One of the things I quickly discovered and love about riding is the moto family/community. I’ve met so many amazing, inspiring people along the way. There’s such a sense of camaraderie among bikers. I’ve been very inspired by the female riding /wrenching community especially. I Love meeting and seeing women working on or building their own rides. It’s something I’m learning to do and hoping to get better at.
I’m hoping to go on more long distance rides. Last year my boyfriend and I rode up the coast from San Diego to San Simeon (about a 7 hour ride). That’s the longest road trip I’ve done but I see many more in my future!
